Education

Inspiring future generations is a key element for all that we do here at the Heritage Center. We fulfill this goal through engaging programs, lectures and seminars geared to students, their teachers and the general public.

Programs and Activities

Family Saturdays

Activities are Free with Admission!

Saturday, May 18, 2013
Families have the opportunity to spend an afternoon at Turkey Creek School making crafts with the schoolmarm and playing historic games.   The living history activities offer a fun way to learn the history of the region and help develop a deeper appreciation for why and how tasks were accomplished in the early pioneering days of the Cherokee Strip.  Spending time at Turkey Creek School allows kids to experience a typical school day in 1910.

One Saturday each month the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center will host living history activities for the whole family in Humphrey Heritage Village from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.

Open Day at Turkey Creek School!

On Friday, May 24, 2013 the doors of Turkey Creek School will open to all students 3rd - 8th grade.   The school day begins at 10:00 a.m. and ends at 2:00 p.m. following a tour of the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center.  The fee is $5 per student and class photographs are available for $7.

Students will be greeted by the schoolmarm who will take them through their daily studies of reading, writing and ciphering as it would have been taught in the Cherokee Outlet in 1910.   Each student will have a slate, chalk, ink and nib pen to work with during their visit to Turkey Creek School.

Students are encouraged to wear period clothing and bring their lunch pails filled with a typical 1910 Oklahoma lunch.  After lunch students play on the Village grounds enjoying age-old games such as drop the handkerchief and red rover.

Call the Education Department today to reserve your student for Open Day at Turkey Creek School (580)237-1907 x227.
