Dr. Fears Lecture Series Date Change

ENID, Okla. – The Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center’s “Lessons In Leadership Through the Great Books” lecture series will resume Jan. 25 at Northern Oklahoma College’s Gantz Center. The next lecture was scheduled to take place Jan. 11, but a scheduling conflict has moved the lecture to Jan. 25. This will be the fourth in the five lecture series and will cover Machiavelli’s “The Prince.” Dr. J. Rufus Fears has led the series of free lectures for the CSRHC based on the Great Books used in education curriculum and has compared and contrasted leadership in the past with our leadership today.

“Dr. Fears brings amazing insight into lessons of leadership that help us think in new ways about our past and future,” said Dr. Cheryl Evans, Dean of Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s Enid Campus. “I am always impressed by the way he engages his audience and just how quickly an hour can fly by.”

The Center is in the process of completing the construction of the new Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center. That building will officially open this fall when a grand opening ceremony will take place during the Cherokee Strip Days Celebration. The $8 million facility is ready to host guests for a sneak peek and Enid residents have a chance to be one of those guests. The Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center is offering a chance to win two seats at a dinner with Dr. J. Rufus Fears, Scholar in Residence, at the brand new Center. A catered meal will be served with a short tour before the last of Dr. Fears’ Leadership lectures takes place Feb. 8.

Tickets are being sold at the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center’s office located on Owen K. Garriott for $10 each with a drawing on Jan. 31, where six lucky couples will be awarded seats at the exclusive dinner. The catered dinner will take place Feb. 8 at 5 p.m. in the Center. Andi Holland, president of the CSRHC, will provide an overview of the future of history and heritage in Northwest Oklahoma. The group will have reserved seats at Dr. Fears’ final lecture, which will follow the dinner at Northern Oklahoma College’s Gantz Center beginning at 7 p.m. The final lecture will discuss the popular “Night” by Elie Wiesel.

Dr. Fears holds the G.T. and Libby Blankenship Chair in the History of Liberty at the University of Oklahoma. He also currently serves as David and Ann Brown Distinguished Fellow of the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs. Dr. Fears earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center named Fears as Scholar in Residence for the educational arm of the Heritage Center, the Leadership Institute. In this capacity he leads the Heritage Center in a variety of educational programs to teach leadership principles exemplified by those who settled the Cherokee Strip and through their perseverance developed northwest Oklahoma into a prosperous region with strong family values. A main goal of Heritage Center Leadership Institute is to reach thousands of school children in this region and beyond through teachers sharing the knowledge they have gained through these educational opportunities.
